Cancer care in Blackburn

Round-the-clock care for cancer patients

If you are preparing for or currently receiving cancer treatment, or have had treatment in the past, you’ll know that it can be a daunting time. You may have any number of questions and concerns, and alongside battling any tiredness or anxiety, it can be frequently stressful and worrying for you and your family.

At The Beardwood, we want to ease those worries and provide you with streamlined care and easy access to treatment, supporting you at every hurdle.

We have been treating cancer patients in our very own dedicated Oncology unit (The Beardwood Cancer Centre) since 2008. This is where you will come for both consultations and treatment, and you will also find private bedrooms for you to use, should an overnight stay be required.

These rooms include amenities such as TV and WiFi to make your stay as comfortable as possible and to ensure you stay connected with friends and family during this challenging time.

The Beardwood Cancer Centre offers treatments for:

  • Blood cancers
  • Breast cancer
  • Brain cancer
  • Colo-rectal/bowel cancer
  • Gynaecological cancer
  • Head and neck cancer
  • Lung cancer
  • Prostate cancer
  • Renal cancer
  • Sarcomas (malignant tumours)

Treatment at the Beardwood Cancer Centre is typically done on a day case basis. We have 4 private treatment rooms for delivering chemotherapy, all equipped with en-suite facilities and easy access.

Appointment times are wholly flexible, which is especially important during your course of chemotherapy/hormone therapy, as you will be visiting us periodically over a number of weeks. Typically, treatments are offered between 8.30am and 4.30pm, but we are flexible to your needs, and evening classes can be available for those who still work during the day.

We have a dedicated CT and MRI scanner on-site, used to check on a patient’s response to treatment, with fast access should it be required.

An on-site pharmacy is available to make picking up any prescriptions straightforward, removing the stress of having to go elsewhere to get your medication.

Oncology specialists are with you every step of the way – at every consultation, during treatment, and in the clinic during follow-ups, which for most patients take place for up to 5 years after diagnosis.

We promote a 24-hour on-call service when you are between treatments, ensuring that expert care is just one call away. This isn’t just for emergencies; many of our patients call this service when they need advice, or when they are feeling anxious and need to hear a friendly voice.

Palliative chemotherapy is also on offer, with private rooms to cater to you and your family in this sensitive time, along with palliative care specialists. The primary aim of palliative chemotherapy is to help manage your symptoms and provide pain relief, improving your quality of life where possible, and providing comfort in the later stages.

When you come to the Beardwood Cancer Centre for the first time, you will most likely have already had a diagnosis. This consultation will be focused on all your potential treatment options, and your oncologist (along with a chemotherapy nurse) will be able to advise you on expected outcomes from each option.

You will then be asked to sign consent forms regarding your treatment, and you will be given time to go away and think about these options, usually at least 48 hours.

This is a good time to think about what you want, deciding on goals for recovery, and whether or not these treatments are right for you. While your oncologist can offer advice about the best possible treatment plan, this ensures the decision is entirely yours, and means you can come to a decision without any pressure.

Once you’ve decided to proceed, you’ll be booked in for your first treatment session, normally the week after this consultation. Your first session is called a ‘pre-chemotherapy visit’, where your lead nurse can recap diagnosis and confirm your consent as well as all the details about your chosen treatment plan. It also allows your nursing team to fill in all the necessary nursing documentation before treatment itself begins.

For private patients, we have a patient administrator who will liaise with your chosen insurer when authorising treatment, helping to take any undue stress away from you.

The next steps depend on the regime you are on. Some patients will have oral medication, whereas others will have their treatment delivered intravenously (directly into the vein).

As your progress throughout treatment is monitored and reviewed frequently, we can make sure you are undergoing the most effective treatment, tailoring the programme for best optimisation as needed.

We also have an excellent on-site team of physiotherapists with extensive experience helping patients who have undergone cancer treatments. This could be to help with any pain, swelling or stiffness experienced as a result of your treatment, or to aid your mobility after a period of general inactivity.

Appointments can be arranged directly through us, rather than having to wait for a referral, allowing your rehabilitation to proceed promptly. Working alongside pain specialists, we can help manage your symptoms effectively during your treatment.

  • Patient Satisfaction – 98.1% of other patients in 2019 said they would happily recommend the Beardwood Hospital to friends and family in an independent report, and we’re confident that you’ll agree. 98.6% also said that the quality of care here at Beardwood Hospital was either ‘very good’ or ‘excellent’. We aim to make your stay with us as comfortable as possible, and these results highlight our continued efforts to ensure this is achieved.
  • Fully Accredited – We have full accreditation with the Macmillan Quality Environment Mark (MQEM), ensuring the highest level of cancer care is offered to all our patients. All our nurses have been adopted by Macmillan, with regular training (such as an in-depth chemotherapy training course) to match current standards.
  • Dedicated Oncology Unit - Rather than having to contend with the wider population of patients in the main hospital, we have our own Oncology unit, the Beardwood Cancer Centre, with its own dedicated car park for ease of access. Expert consultant Oncologists are available to help with your treatment every step of the way, alongside our fantastic team of nurses and palliative care specialists.
  • On-site Diagnostics – Rapid access to MRI, X-ray and CT scanning equipment, as well as blood testing facilities, reducing any unnecessary journeys and wait times.
  • Round-the-clock Care – From your initial assessment and diagnosis, you will be offered access to our 24-hour on-call programme when waiting for your next treatments. Alongside emergency use, this can be called for any advice needed or extra support when you feel anxious.
  • Personalised Care Programmes – Every patient journey is different, which is why we offer you personalised treatment plans, regularly reviewing each programme and tailoring accordingly. Whether it be chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy, or other forms of intervention, you can rest assured that your treatment will be adapted to suit your needs.
